A note from the composer...
Following the premiere of Silver Rose for brass band and narrator by Lydbrook Band, conductor Ian Holmes and narrator Robert Hardy in 2014, the actor asked me to compose a piece of music for future performance by the band at his funeral, incorporating classical themes of his choice. Sadly he passed away before the request was formally recorded; however, the music was already partially written and subsequently completed in his memory. The title is a line taken from Song by Isaac Rosenberg, the last movement of SilverRose.
Robert Hardy’s selection of music was chosen from the following works: opening violin melody from Nielsen Violin Concerto Op. 33 Movement 1 Praeludium (1911); Un Bal 'A Ball' from Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14 (1830); motif from Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor Op. 67 Movement 1 Allegro (1804-1808); ‘alphorn call’ from Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68 Movement 4 (1884); Sibelius Symphony No. 6 in D minor Op. 104 Movement 4 Allegro Molto (1923).
