A note from the composer...
Recitative and Aria reflects the idiom of operatic arias, evolving through a series of melodic variations on the initial theme. Lyrical string writing and evocative phrases create an impassioned directional force, underpinned by unexpected rhythmic impulses.
The music was written especially for Frances Isserlis' 70th Birthday Party and first performed by the Carducci Quartet at the Prema Arts Centre, Uley, 7th January 2012. It is dedicated to my good neighbours, Frances and Alan Isserlis, and the title reflects their love of opera.
