A note from the composer...
Ballad was written for my local pub’s charity Promises Auction following a bid for ‘an original piece for a special occasion’ in August 2007. The bid was won by the landlord and landlady, and the music written for their wedding.
Their initials and those of their daughter (‘A’, ‘G’ and ‘D’), are used throughout the piece, most frequently as a recurring motif linking one phrase to the next.
The music’s title reflects some of the many definitions of ballad such as “a simple song” and “a popular song; especially: a slow romantic or sentimental song”(Miriam-Webster online), and a “narrative set to music” (Wikipedia).
Ballad was first performed by Clare Hammond in 2019.
