A note from the composer...
Modular 20 celebrates the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Shepherd Group Brass Bands and Shepherd Group. It features themes created from thoughts and feelings shared by youth members about what it means to play with the bands, such as ‘support each other’, ‘brought out the best’, ‘welcoming’, ‘fun and energy’ and ‘friendships, teamwork, family’, as well as an industrial ‘punch press’ cadenza using found wood and metal sounds.
The audience is included too, with an optional British Sign Language part, inspired by the Shepherd Group Brass Band ‘I Can Play With Brass Roots’ initiative to introduce children from the D/deaf community into the band. Links and a QR code can be found in the score to videos demonstrating how to sign the words ‘friendships, teamwork, family’, created by Shepherd Group Brass Band Principal Cornet Sean Chandler.
20% from the proceeds of each sale of Modular 20 score and parts will go to the National Centre for Early Music on behalf of the ongoing ‘I Can Play With Brass Roots’ initiative to introduce children from the Deaf community into the band.
